It's safe to say a lot of planning goes in to any renovation, but when Meagan Miksch, blogger at Seabrook Styles, remodeled the dated bathroom in her 1950s Austin bungalow, she faced even more challenges than usual. In addition to being the only bathroom in the whole house, it's only 50 square feet—so the homeowners were forced to get creative.
At first, the pastel yellow-and-blue space was a time capsule of the home's past; the bathroom was one of the last rooms to be brought to modern times:
After getting a quote that seemed unnecessarily high (even labeling subway tile as a luxury upgrade), Meagan decided to take matters into her own hands with the help of her husband, dad, and brother-in-law. And we have to say, we're so glad she did! The result is simplistic beauty at its finest:
Although the bathroom is small, Meagan chose to add detail by mixing textures. Her inspiration to use shiplap came from watching HGTV's Fixer Upper.
"Since I'm from Texas, I have always loved old barns and houses when visiting my family out in the country. So, of course, I appreciate the style and revival of shiplap that Joanna Gaines has brought to the design world," Meagan told CountryLiving.com.
To get the look she wanted, Megan used a tongue and groove wood from Lowe's and painted it with Americana Decor chalk paint in Relic. "You could say I'm a little obsessed with this chalk paint color...it's the perfect navy-gray mix in my opinion," said Meagan.
So if you thought shiplap was just a material to use when you have a minimal decorating budget, it's time you thought again.
"Wood accent walls are a simple, quick DIY that can make a huge impact in a small area, whether it's on the wall or even on the ceiling. We have done both!" said Meagan.
